Excelsior Maassluis footballers stay active with Walking Football, a form of football for seniors. The group has grown into a fixed and popular activity at the club. The start of Walking Football at Excelsior Maassluis came about through the efforts of involved members, including Egbert van der Worp. He was active at the club and gained experience with the Dutch Walking Football team in England. With that knowledge and enthusiasm, the OldStars football also got a foothold in Maassluis. What started with eight players grew steadily. At its peak, the group had fifty members; currently, there are around forty. One of the fixed faces is Albert Keijzer. He grew up in Schipluiden, played there at Steeds Voorwaarts, and later ended up in Maassluis at Excelsior. After he stopped playing football, he was a donor for years, but thanks to Walking Football, he became active again at the club. Together with others, he ensures that everything around the OldStars football runs smoothly. Also Aad Groen is no longer to be missed from the group. As a true Vlaardinger, he started at Fortuna and played later at Sunlight. Through work and study, he stopped playing football for a long time, until Walking Football came his way. For him, and for many others, it turned out to be the ideal way to exercise again without overloading the body. The OldStars group has become a colorful gathering. The participants come not only from Maassluis, but also from Vlaardingen, Schiedam, Maasland, and Maasdijk. Just that mix creates an open and relaxed atmosphere. Anyone over 55 can join, with or without a football background. The game is played on an adapted field with small goals, without running and without physical contact. That makes it safe, but certainly not boring. Insight, technique, and teamwork remain important. The group plays twice a week. Monday morning is the busiest, with often thirty players on the field. During vacations, there are fewer, but the core group is always there. On Thursday, they also play, usually with a smaller, fanatical group that likes to play an extra game. Under the guidance of a trainer, there is a lot of attention for warming-up and cooling-down. That is a fixed part and important for injury prevention. But just as important is what happens after the football. The third part, with coffee and good conversations, is an integral part. The mutual camaraderie is great, and they really look out for each other. In case of illness or other personal circumstances, the group is there for each other, among other things through a joint love-and-sorrow pot. In addition to the weekly football, the group is also active outside the field. The OldStars committee, which includes Albert Keijzer and Aad Groen, organizes an annual Walking Football tournament for a good cause. In recent years, money has been raised for a local hospice, initiatives for young people with dementia, and the Alzheimer's Association Vlaardingen and Maassluis. This year, the proceeds will go to the Ambulance Wishes Foundation.
