Excelsior faces challenge with high number of expiring contracts
Excelsior will try to maintain its position in the Eredivisie in 2026/27, but the question is what selection it will have in 2027/28. The number of expiring contracts is high.
Selection
In the goal, goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel and Tijmen Holla have an expiring contract, with the latter having a club option. For Van Gassel, it will be that if clubs come, Excelsior will consider it.
At the back, Casper Widell, Rick Meissen, Nolan Martens and Simon Janssen have an expiring contract, while Kasey Bos and Jan Plug have been hired and a one-year contract with them is therefore logical. Meissen, Martens and Janssen have a club option.
Chances
The chance that these players will leave seems not great, with Meissen and Martens certainly playing a key role. With a 56.6 Skill, Meissen is even after Casper Widdell the best defender in terms of Skill of Excelsior.
Future
It is therefore obvious that Widell will not leave easily, but with an expiring contract, Excelsior may have no other choice if a club comes because it can only earn something from him this summer. With him, there is no option in the contract to extend for a year.
