Excelsior is preparing for Casper Widell's departure, giving Rangers a clear chance to find a suitable replacement. According to reports from Algemeen Dagblad, Excelsior has signed Feyenoord centre-back Jan Plug on loan to replace Widell. Widell, who made over 30 appearances in the Eredivisie last season, is ready to leave Rotterdam as he enters the final year of his contract. Rangers had previously shown interest in a loan deal for Scott McKenna, but now have another option in sight. Widell is 23 years old and fits into Rangers' recruitment strategy of bringing in players who can develop and have high resale value. The urgency to find a new centre-back has increased, however, as Ben Godfrey has suffered an injury and Emmanuel Fernandez is the only available senior centre-back for the match against Jagiellonia Bialystok on 6 August. Excelsior has already found a replacement for Widell, giving Rangers a clear chance to find a suitable replacement.
