Excelsior brings Jan Plug in on loan from Feyenoord
Excelsior has secured 21‑year‑old Jan Plug from Feyenoord on a one‑year loan, giving the young left‑back an immediate chance to play in the Eredivisie. The defender, who shone last season with FC Dordrecht in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, chose to stay in Rotterdam and pursue his dream at Feyenoord.
Why is Plug moving to Excelsior?
Plug already attracted interest from foreign clubs, but he wanted to remain in the Netherlands. Feyenoord still sees plenty of potential in the youth product and agreed to a loan that gives the player top‑level exposure. "I want to prove I'm ready for De Kuip," Plug said in an interview. At Excelsior he gets a spot in the starting eleven right away, which is essential for his development.
How does he fit into Excelsior’s current squad?
Excelsior currently sits 13th in the Eredivisie with 38 points, a record of 10 wins, 8 draws and 16 losses from 34 games, and recent form of WDWWD. The team has scored 43 goals and conceded 56, leaving a –13 goal difference. Plug’s arrival bolsters a defence that has shown many gaps this season. His experience in the second tier and his left‑footed abilities suit manager Marinus Dijkhuizen’s tactics.
What does this mean for the future?
The deal will be finalised on Monday, after which Plug can report for training immediately. Excelsior hopes he not only steadies the back line but also becomes a stepping stone for a permanent move to Feyenoord. The club’s next fixture is an away game against Utrecht on 31 January 2027, where they aim to showcase the defensive improvements.
What have the clubs said about the agreement?
Feyenoord stressed they will continue to monitor Plug and that the loan is a win‑win situation. Excelsior praised the professionalism of the Rotterdam side and welcomed the young defender as a key addition for the rest of the season. Plug himself looks forward to the challenge: "I want to use every minute and show I’m ready for the Kuip."
