Excelsior Maassluis has organised the first edition of Voetbalherinneringen. The event took place on Tuesday 13 October in the club's canteen and lasted for an hour and a half.
Project leader Arjen Pijfers from Alzheimer Nederland opened the first meeting. He said the session, like a football match, lasts two times three quarters of an hour and ends with a fun football quiz. The initiative is adapted from Scotland's 'Football Memories' and started years ago at Willem II. It is now organised at multiple football associations in the Netherlands, especially among professional and amateur clubs.
Participants shared memories of Excelsior Maassluis, Ajax, Feyenoord and the Netherlands national team, using newspaper clippings, photos and videos. The event is for people with or without (mild) Alzheimer's, lonely people and elderly football fans. Participation is free.
Pre-registration is required, explains contact person Arie van der Ende. "Pre-registration is necessary; this can be done via arieende58@gmail.com or via 0651987134." The meetings take place every second Tuesday of the month in the canteen at Lavendelstraat 2 in Maassluis.
The club recently established Foundation 4 Maassluis and aims to contribute positively to Maassluis society through this project. The project receives financial support from Oranjefonds, Samenzijnwijmaassluis and Deltaport and collaborates with Alzheimer Nederland, Samen zijn wij Maassluis, Naut and Argos Zorggroep.
The first team of Excelsior Rotterdam currently sits seventh in the Eredivisie with 11 points from 7 games. Check the full squad and current standings on our club pages. The next fixture is at home against Groningen on 11 October.
